Junkanoo Beach

Port Day in Nassau, Bahamas

I finally got down to writing something about the ports we visited while on our very first cruise. If you haven’t read about it, then click here. Well let’s get down to it.

One of the ports, infact, the first port, was Nassau, Bahamas. The ship arrived early, around 7 a.m. but we were allowed to disembark around 8 a.m. I think we got off the ship a little before 8:30 a.m. Sicne the shore excursions from the cruise company are exhorbitant and since we are not into zip lining, snorkeling and such, our agenda for the day was to walk around the island, as far as we could get and also to get a dip in the nearby public beach. The closest beach within a 10-15 minutes walk was Junkanoo beach.Junkanoo BeachJunkanoo Beach

The beach was clean with white sand. We spent about an hour there and then proceed to walk deeper into the island. About 15 minutes later we reached an old fort – Fort Fincastle.Fort FincastleFort Fincastle

Wasn’t much to see, so we did not enter, but we just walked around the area. It was very scenic though. Beautiful views of the bright blue seas. It was very hot so we decided to walk back towards the port. On the way back we stopped to grab some lunch. We were seated outside on a high table and it was so shaky that my drink fell and spilled over. The restaurant was kind enough to replace it for free. Since conch is a very popular delicacy I wanted to try it so I ordered some fried conch.Fried ConchFried Conch

The more popular thing to do it to eat the conch raw, as a salad. We found a fisherman sitting in his boat and preparing the conch salad. Did not look very hygenic though. Good thing I settled for the fried ones. They had the consistency of calamari (squid) and almost tasted the same. After a enjoyable lunchm we walked around the port. Here are a few pics of the port area.

After spending the day in Nassau we boarded the ship and were bound for Freeport within an hour or so. Nassau is a lovely place but expensive.
